Classic cars are great when they do as requested, namely, starting first thing in the morning, not overheating in heavy traffic and generally being a useable mode of transport.

Unfortunately, like the best of us, classic cars are subject to the ravages of time and, as such (and dare I suggest that, once again, like the best of us), do not always perform as well as they should. They require careful care and preventative maintenance and, therefore, can be a physically and emotionally draining experience for their owners. That said, when the engine is on song, the sun is high in the sky and your favourite back-road opens up before you, there are few feelings to beat it. One of my fondest memories of recent years centres around a summer evening, a convertible Jaguar E-Type V12 with the top down and an empty stretch of country road. The 5.3-litre power plant throbbed away underneath the sleek bonnet with a soundtrack reminiscent of the pod racers from Star Wars and all was right with the world as the wind whistled through the cabin at speeds erring on the side of 'naughty.'

Join a classic car asset-sharing club and you leave all the skinned knuckles, searching for lost bolts in the engine bay and evenings spent in a draughty garage tinkering (also referred to as trying to find out why the darned thing won't actually start!). Thanks to a dedicated team of mechanics who ensure that the vehicles are kept in tip-top order, the cars are ready for anything, from spending a few days just pottering around town to a cross-European trip.

All that you need do is concentrate on enjoying that perfect moment when all there is in the world is you, your travelling companion and the open road. And those evenings not spent lying on your back with a face full of engine oil in the garage can instead be spent on planning your next jaunt.

The thing is, even with a realistic budget, it would be financially crippling, or at the very least unjustifiable on economic grounds, to tax, insure and maintain more than a few cars at a time. Oh, and if your taste is more for the latest exotica rather than the established classics, then you also have to factor in the hefty depreciation for a car that would most probably spend much of its time behind a garage door-that is, if you have a garage...

Also, when you think about it, how many truly memorable journeys do you really make? Of course, it would be great to take a Ferrari to the local supermarket, but when you finish your weekly shop, you have very little boot space in which to store your purchases and someone will have left an expensive dent in both your door and your wallet, as well as a trolley parked against your bumper.

So what one needs is a garage in which someone else has purchased all of the cars and pays for their running and upkeep, but you can select from their stable at any time and, for the price of the fuel, make your memorable trips all the more memorable. Obviously, there would be an annual fee for this service, but other than that and the aforementioned petrol, you would be free from all of the usual car-owning drags, as well as not only having access to just one or two cars but as many as 30 or 40 vehicles!
