The whisky world is, at present, attempting to unpick the industrial revolution. When Aeneas Coffey patented his continuous still in 1831, he made the production of blended whisky on an almost limitless scale possible.

Current whisky blends and brands continue to dominate global sales. However, the creative consumer is turning towards the authenticity and character of malt whisky and is demanding something more individual.

By getting closer to the producer and the source and making it a lot more personal, wannabe whisky buffs are hankering for more of a lifestyle experience by joining distilleries for members only.

The core appeal of membership is involvement-invariably, the distilleries have 'distilling days' and whisky schools. Trust is also required, as some blends will only exist in the imagination until they have been produced. The lure, of course, is that, eventually, you may be able to pour a glass of malt for your friends and say, "I helped make this!"

Although in its early stages, it appears to be only a matter of time before somebody starts a champagne club based around the same model and, when they do, you'll hear about it first at Fractional Life.
